Abstract
A bis(3-vinyl ester-2-hydroxy propane) ether-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) was synthesised from diglycidyl ether-terminated PDMS and acrylic acid, structurally characterised by FTIR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy and used as a toughening agent in a diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A epoxy resin cured with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane. The epoxy system and toughened epoxy system were further modified with organophilic montmorillonite clay and the mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal properties of the systems investigated. The water absorption behaviour of the systems was also investigated and fracture surfaces of the systems characterised by scanning electron microscopy. 44 refs.
