Abstract
In order to prepare polymer composites filled with silicon carbide nanoparticles to be used in tribological applications, grafting polymerisation onto the particles was carried out as a way of surface modification in order to tailor interfacial interaction in the composite. The silicone carbide surface was pre-treated with a silane coupling agent, followed by radical grafting polymerisation of acrylamide and styrene respectively. Infrared spectroscopy and measurement of dispersivity in solvent, were used to demonstrate that the desired polymer chains were covalently bonded to the surface of the nanoparticles. In addition, the polymerisation conditions were investigated and the controlling factors were established accordingly. 25 refs.
