Abstract
The effects of fillers, including ammonium polyphosphate, aluminium trihydrate and talc, and an impact modifier/compatibiliser (EVA) on the fire retardant and mechanical properties of PP were investigated by tensile and Izod impact testing, TGA, scanning electron microscopy and limiting oxygen index measurements. The influence of a silane coating on the surface of ammonium polyphosphate was also investigated. The results obtained were interpreted by means of thermal decomposition, chemical reaction between the components and formation of a protective ceramic-like layer at the surface of talc-filled PP upon ignition. 27 refs.
