Abstract
The synthesis of grafted composite particles by emulsion copolymerisation of styrene with sodium sulphopropyl lauryl maleate and 2-hydroxy-4-(3-methacryloxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)benzophenone with potassium peroxydisulphate as initiator in the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles pre-treated with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate is described. The products were characterised by UV-visible absorption and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, weight loss after UV irradiation, DSC and GPC, and the results are discussed in comparison with those for the ternary copolymer itself, for polystyrene and for polystyrene/titanium dioxide composite in terms of resistance to UV irradiation. 16 refs.
