Abstract
A novel superabsorbent composite from waste potato leaves, organophilic montmorillonite, acrylic acid and acrylamide was produced by microwave irradiation using potassium persulphate as polymerisation initiator and N,N’-methylene bisacrylamide as crosslinker. Polymerisation conditions were investigated by orthogonal tests and optimum reaction conditions established. The superabsorbent composite was characterised by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and TGA and the effects of monomer to potato leaf ratio and montmorillonite content on composite water absorbency evaluated. 28 refs.
