Abstract
Numerical results are presented for boundary element simulations of creeping flow through model fibrous media composed of parallel fibre bundles. Starting from ordered arrays of fibre bundles, several types of microstructural variations, namely variations in the horizontal and vertical spacing of the bundles and changes in the sharpness of the bundle perimeter, are introduced and their effect on permeability is examined and quantified. The latter is achieved using a new parameter, called “measure of deviation”, which is derived from Ripley’s second order intensity function. It is shown that deviations from regular arrays cause substantial scatter in the corresponding permeability values. 26 refs.
