Abstract
Two different fragrant essences (jasmine and sandalwood) were incorporated into an ABS/polycarbonate blend and the effect of the essences and essence content on the fragrant properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of the blends investigated. Volatility and mechanical tests, melt flow index measurement and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the essences not only endowed the blend with fragrance but also acted as lubricants and surface treatment agents during processing. It was established that the dosage of fragrant masterbatch needed to be kept under 5 phr to obtain the best combination of properties and that fragrance could be maintained for a long time at room temperature. 10 refs.
