Abstract
Synthesis of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, and a nanocomposite of this polymer with sodium silicate, was carried out using similar emulsion polymerisation methods with ammonium persulphate used as initiator and an in situ transition metal complex as catalyst. Properties of the polymer and nanocomposite were compared using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, intrinsic viscosity measurements, tensile properties, water absorbency and biodegradation in sludge water, soil burial conditions or in a culture medium. The nanocomposite was shown to have improved thermal stability, biodegradability and water absorbency (superabsorbency) compared to the simple copolymer. 35 refs.
