Abstract
Polycarbonate was loaded with from 0 to 10% of carbon nanofibres and the resulting nanocomposites studied by ESR spectroscopy. A complex resonance spectrum was recorded and assigned to the convolution of resonance lines originating from the conducting electrons delocalised over the metallic domains of the nanotubes, free radicals generated during polymer processing and catalyst traces. A qualitative correlation between the dependence of the ESR line width on loading with carbon nanofibres and the dependence of DC electrical conductivity on loading with carbon nanofibres was observed and considered of use for assessing the conductivity of the nanocomposites. 39 refs.
