Abstract
Environmentally friendly recycled hardwood fibre (RHWF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites (RHWF/PP) have been processed by using maleic anhydride rafted polypropylene (MAPP – polypropylene with 2% maleic anhydride grafting on it) as compatibiliser. RHW fibre was obtained by recycling chemically pulped hardwood fibre based paper, and has better strength as compared to recycled newspaper fibre produced by mechanical pulping. Tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composites are higher than those of the PP matrix, increase with increasing amounts of fibre in the composites, and are better than those of literature reported recycled newspaper fibre/polypropylene composites. Fibre/ matrix interfacial adhesion in these composites has been evaluated by scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. 37 Refs.
