Abstract
A study is reported of the transport of water through polyamide-nitrile rubber blends with respect to the effect of water absorption on the mechanical properties of the blend. The diffusion of water through the blends was investigated at various temperatures. It was established that the temperature dependence of the diffusion characteristics indicated that the transport mechanism varied with the composition of the blend, its morphology and temperature. In all cases, the diffusion mechanism followed a Fickian trend. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus and yield stress of PA and blends were found to decrease due to the water uptake. 25 refs.
