Abstract
An investigation was carried out to determine energy (heat sources, mechanical energy and internal dissipated energy) during the mechanical testing of polymers from an analysis of strain and thermal data. Heat sources were calculated using a heat equation established using classical thermodynamics concepts and a technique developed to estimate thermal parameters easily without knowledge of the value of the heat source (equal to zero) whilst remaining within the framework of the heat equation. Large strain mechanical tests were carried out on a standard polycarbonate tensile specimen with a thickness equal to 4 mm and the energy balance calculated and associated with volumetric deformation. 23 refs.
