Abstract
Whilst polycarbonate is a widely used engineering polymer, its tendency to notch sensitivity and crazing, together with its high melt viscosity and processing problems, have led to attempts to use it in blends with polyolefins. This, however, leads to a reduction in tensile and flexural strengths and stiffness. This paper, therefore, investigates the rheological and mechanical properties of polycarbonate in blends with HDPE and glass fibres. Maleic anhydride grafted LDPE was used as a compatibiliser, and tests were carried out on composites with and without the compatibiliser. LDPE-g-MAH in the composite was shown to improve the reinforcement efficiency of the glass fibres and strengthen the adhesion between polymer matrix and glass fibres, leading to good mechanical properties. 16 refs.
