Abstract
In order to develop an environmentally friendly polymer, a novel superabsorbent composite (SAC) was prepared by graft copolymerisation of acrylic acid (AA) onto xanthan gum (XG) and then hybridisation with organic montmorillonite (OMMT) by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. The characterisation of the SAC was confirmed by FTIR, SEM and DSC. Moreover, the water-retention characteristics of the composite were further studied. The results showed that the synthesised composite effectively increased the water-retention capacity. Therefore, this new composite could be considered as an excellent candidate for various industrial applications. 15 Refs.
