Abstract
Polyurethane/clay nanocomposites were synthesised from renewable sources. A polyether polyol, prepared from palm oil-based oleic acid and glycerol, was used to produce a polyurethane by treatment with an isocyanate with dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid as a catalyst and emulsifier. An unmodified clay (kunipia-F) was treated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB-mont) or octadodecylamine (ODA-mont). The d-spacings in CTAB-mont and ODA-mont were 1.571 and 1.798 nm, respectively. The organoclays were intercalated in the polyurethane, as confirmed by a wide angle x-ray diffraction studies. Addition of 1-5 wt% of organoclay produced the most significant improvements in tensile properties and glass transition temperature. 19 refs.
