Abstract
A novel coloured epoxy resin has been synthesised by reaction between epichlorohydrin and bisazodiol. This paper discusses the curing kinetics and thermal stability of the coloured epoxy resin, blended with a conventional epoxy resin in the ratio of 15:85 (w/w) using various amine curing agents. Several glass fibre reinforced composites of coloured epoxy resins and DGEBA resin in the same weight ratio were prepared using diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, p-p-‘-diamino diphenyl sulphone and p-p’-diamino diphenyl methane as curing agents in stoichiometric proportions. The fabricated composites were evaluated for mechanical strength, electrical properties, and resistance to various chemicals, and these properties are shown to be related to the effect of the amine structure of the curing agent used. 15 refs.
