Abstract
Methacrylic acid, (MAA) was used as an additive for the modification of peroxide-cured SBR highly filled with aluminium trioxide flame retardant filler. Experimental results indicate that the introduction of MAA can improve the mechanical properties of the SBR vulcanisates, and that the mechanical properties of the SBR vulcanisates depend greatly on the MAA and aluminium trioxide contents. The oxygen index of the SBR vulcanisate depends on the aluminium trioxide content and is shown to be less dependent on the MAA content. Scanning electron microscopy shows the changes in the fractured surfaces of the aluminium trioxide filled SBR vulcanisates after the addition of MAA, which is claimed to be related to the changes in mechanical properties. 14 refs.
