Abstract
The preparation by a hot pressing process of composites of polyurethane derived from castor oil and polymeric 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate with cellulose fibres derived from Luffa aegyptiaca, and their characterisation by TGA, tensile testing and water absorption, is described. The effects of surface treatment of the fibres by alkali treatment (mercerisation) with or without subsequent benzylation on the mechanical, morphological and water absorption properties of the fibres and composites were investigated by FTIR, XRD, DSC and SEM, and the results are discussed. 16 refs.
