Abstract
An investigation was carried out into the diffusion of a peroxide (Perkadox 14-40) through two EPDM sheets (one containing 2% and the other 10% peroxide), pressed together and cured in a heated mould kept at 187 degrees Centigrade. The results obtained are discussed in terms of a gradient of hardness through the thickness of the sheets, the swelling behaviour of the sheets in toluene and the resistance to liquid and swelling of the bi-layer rubber system. Modelling of the process of absorption and evaporation was also performed, explaining torsion of the bi-layer sheet observed during absorption and its stability. This transfer of curing agent during curing is applicable to the retreading of truck tyres with a new rubber band. 19 refs.
