Abstract
A study is reported which compares the mechanical performance of plain weft knitted glass fibre fabric- and carbon fibre fabric-polyamide-12 composites at the same reinforcement content. The composite sheets were produced by hot pressing knit layers consisting of staple glass and polyamide-12 and carbon fibre and PA-12 fibres, respectively. Testing was carried out under both static, (tensile, flexural) and dynamic (perforation impact) conditions. Mechanical anisotropy and large differences between the stiffness and strength due to tensile and flexural loading were attributed to the structure of the knits (‘unbalanced’ reinforcement) and their non-planar structure in the composite sheets. The carbon fibre-reinforced composite was shown to outperform the glass fibre version both under static and dynamic loading, due to the high strength of the carbon fibre and the good interfacial bonding between the carbon fibre and the PA-12 matrix. 14 refs.
