Abstract
The development is described of a high temperature, high performance corrosion resistant polymeric coating for carbon steel heat exchanger tubes used in geothermal binary-cycle power plants. In order to enhance the thermal conductivity and improve the mechanical properties of polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) used as the coating material, chopped carbon fibres were incorporated into the PPS matrix. Experiments were carried out on steel panels and it was established that 0.5 wt% of fibres was the most effective amount of fibres to minimise the rate of penetration of electrolytes through the composite coating films. Results of testing indicate hydrothermal stability in addition to corrosion resistance. The rough surface texture of the fibres provided mechanical interlocking bonds with the PPS matrix and such interfacial bonding is said to be responsible for the good mechanical properties of the composite film. 11 refs.
