**Abstract**
Flexible organic elastomeric nanoparticles and two kinds of rigid inorganic silica nanoparticles were dispersed into a Bisphenol A epoxy resin by mechanical mixing or the in-situ sol-gel technique. The morphological properties of the nanocomposites were characterised by TEM and scanning electron microscopy and the tensile properties and fracture toughness of the nanocomposites determined. It was found that the elastomeric nanoparticles significantly enhanced the toughness of the resin and rigid silica nanoparticles improved Young's modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness simultaneously. Both fumed and sol-gel-formed nanosilica particles reinforced the epoxy resin and the nanosilica particles dispersed almost perfectly in the epoxy matrix. 17 refs.
