**Abstract**
 Direct current reactive magnetron sputtering was used to deposit functional titanium dioxide films onto polyester nonwoven fabrics, and the topography and chemical compositions of the coated fabrics were investigated using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Morphology of polyester fibres was seen to have been significantly modified by the sputtering process, and adhesion of the titanium dioxide films to the substrate was satisfactory. Ultraviolet absorption and antistatic properties of the fabrics were significantly improved by the process. 12 refs.
