**Abstract**
 The penetration and perforation performance of E-glass fibre-reinforced unsaturated polyester plates containing 20% of sand as a filler was investigated by means of quasi-static indentation testing using a sharp-tip (30 degree) indentor. The filler had particle sizes of 75 and 600 micrometers and the composite plates were subjected to perforation tests at 5 and 500 mm/min loading rates. Low-velocity impact performance of the composite plates was assessed from load-displacement behaviour during penetration and perforation. It was found that the coarse-sized filler acted as secondary reinforcement in terms of higher energy absorption and the major damage modes were fibre and matrix fracture followed by delamination. 31 refs.
