**Abstract**
 The preparation by solution blending with sonication of nanocomposites of low density polyethylene with different proportions of montmorillonite clay organically modified with 1,2-dimethyl-3-hexadecylimidazolium bromide, and their characterisation by colour (UV-visible spectroscopy), ultrasonic testing (filler dispersion), TGA (thermal stability), AFM (surface morphology) and cone calorimetry (flammability), is described. The effects of organoclay content on peak heat release rate and flame retardant properties of the nanocomposites are discussed in terms of the formation of a clay-enriched protective char layer during combustion. 22 refs.
