**Abstract**
Model block copolymers based on styrene and an oligomeric azo-initiator and synthesised by sequential and simultaneous photoinitiated polymerisation were characterised by small angle X-ray scattering and dynamic mechanical analysis. The molar mass characteristics of the block copolymer were shown to be little affected by the method of synthesis, whereas their morphologies and mechanical behaviour in the bulk state were widely different. Glass-rubber transitions of the microphases of each chain component for samples of copolymers produced by simultaneous polymerisation were indicated by SAXS peaks and are claimed to provide evidence of a well-ordered, three-dimensional lattice of isolated styrene domains within a continuous polymer matrix. In contrast, the absence of well-defined SAXS peaks in the same range of scattering vectors for samples synthesised by sequential polymerisation, suggested the existence, it is claimed, of two co-continuous, randomly interpenetrated microphases of styrene and oligomer blocks with a broad distribution of microheterogeneities by size. 13 refs.
