**Abstract**
Hardwood fibre (HWF) reinforced anhydride and acid functionalised maleic anhydride grafted high density polyethylene (CF-HDPE) composites have been processed by in-situ fibre / matrix interactions, without any use of compatibiliser and without any fibre treatment. The formation of composites is established by the increase in tensile modulus and tensile strength and the decrease in elongation at break with increasing amounts of the reinforcing HWF in HWF/ CF-HDPE composite compositions. The in-situ fibre/matrix interfacial adhesion in these composites has been established by scanning electron microscopy, and also by FTIR Spectroscopy. The measured tensile modulus of the composite with low volume fraction of hardwood fibre as reinforcer compares well with modulus predicted by Inverse rule of mixtures, Hirsch model, Halpin-Tsai equations, Nielsen model and Palsule equation. 31 Refs.
