**Abstract**
An investigation was carried out into the effects of strain rate and crystallinity on the mechanical properties of HDPE/clay nanocomposite microcellular foams fabricated by a batch foaming process. Intercalated clay structures in the nanocomposites were studied by TEM and crystallinity determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Foam morphology was characterised by scanning electron microscopy and mechanical properties determined by uniaxial tensile testing. A constitutive model, which considers the combined effects of strain rate and crystallinity on the tensile behaviour of the foams, was derived and validated experimentally. 52 refs.
