**Abstract**
 Damage initiation and subsequent incremental damage development in three-dimensional woven carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy resin composites fabricated by vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding was investigated experimentally by interlaminar shear strength measurements combined with optical microscopy. The effects of the location of the applied loading and through-the-thickness reinforcement on damage threshold and development are discussed in terms of the presence of resin-rich areas. 17 refs.
