**Abstract**
 To overcome the problems of debonding of Kevlar fibres when used as reinforcement in composites, surface modification is necessary. The use of hydrolysis is examined as a technique to improve the interfacial bonding between the reinforcement and the polymer matrix. Kevlar fibres were hydrolysed in a concentrated aqueous solution of either sulphuric acid or sodium hydroxide and then characterised by measuring the tensile strength and the interlaminar shear strength. The active sites on the hydrolysed surface were determined by the dyeing-decolourising method. 20 refs.
