**Abstract**
 A review is presented on the preparation of metal-containing polymer nanocomposite films via evaporation and sputtering and the functional properties thereof. Examples of optical, high frequency magnetic and antibacterial nanocomposites are included and the use of the electrical properties near the percolation threshold for sensing organic vapours and for photoswitching via the incorporation of chromophores is demonstrated. 66 refs.
