**Abstract**
 The development of a composite intumescent flame retardant system for high density polyethylene based on a charring agent, pentaerythritol, encapsulated by thermoplastic polyurethane, is described. The synergistic effects of other common flame retardants including melamine phosphate, melamine polyphosphate and ammonium polyphosphate with the composite system were investigated by limiting oxygen index and vertical burning tests, TGA, water absorption and TEM, and the results are discussed in terms of optimisation of flame retardance effects. 23 refs.
