**Abstract**
 The adhesive layer of a butt joint bonded by rubber-modified adhesive was observed under cyclic loading conditions using a microscopic video camera in transmitted light. Applying Gurson's constitutive equation to the adhesive layer, the elastic-plastic finite element analysis was performed to simulate the damage behaviour in the adhesive layer. It was established that the observed damage zone coincided with the high void fraction zone. These findings establish the modified Gurson model as a useful tool for the estimation of initiation and propagation of the damage zone in the adhesive layer. 15 refs.
