**Abstract**
 Ultrafine PVAl blend submicron fibres were produced by electrospinning PVAls with number-average degrees of polymerisation of 1700 and 4000 from an aqueous solution containing from 5 to 10% of polymer. The morphology and physical properties, such as tensile strength and melting temperature, of the fibres were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, DSC, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. The effects of PVAl blend mass ratio and concentration and processing parameters, such as applied voltage, and capillary-to-collector distance, on fibre production were evaluated and potential applications, including medical applications, packaging, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications considered. 23 refs.
