**Abstract**
A PU elastomer based on castor oil and polymeric MDI with a NCO/OH ratio of 2 was synthesised and mixed with untreated and treated rice husk having an average particle size of less than 200 micrometers. The treated rice husk was obtained by pretreatment with steam and sodium hydroxide solution and the effects of the pretreated rice on the properties of the composites investigated. The dispersion and fracture surfaces of the composites were examined by scanning electron microscopy and composite properties determined by hardness measurements, TGA and differential scanning calorimetry. Composites containing steam-treated rice husks possessed enhanced interfacial adhesion and were considered good candidates for parquet flooring, shoe heels and sports surfaces. 7 refs.
