**Abstract**
 The mechanical properties and swelling behaviour of natural rubber vulcanisates loaded with kenaf fibres were studied using hydrated silica, resorcinol and hexamethylene tetramine as the adhesion system, and are compared with those of NR composites loaded wit synthetic polyester short fibres. The effect of fibre content on these mechanical properties were also studied before and after ageing, and scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the surface texture of unreinforced and reinforced vulcanisates. 23 refs.
