**Abstract**
A biomimetic route was used and described to prepare a composite of hydroxyapatite (HAP) deposited on a phosphorylated bacterial cellulose (BC). The composite was examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. It was shown that thermal stability of the composite was better than the original BC and that the HAP crystals wrap the surfaces of the BC fibres. Weight loss under thermogravimetric analysis conditions was in three stages, similar to natural bone. 21 refs.
