**Abstract**
 The effects of increased fibre volume fraction via compaction on the structure and mechanical properties of three-dimensional woven carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin composites with through-the-thickness binder tows fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin transfer moulding were investigated by interlaminar shear strength and flexural testing combined with optical microscopy. The results are discussed in terms of distortion of the woven fabric structure with increasing compaction, characterised by decreasing inter-tow distances, nesting and tow deformation. 50 refs.
