**Abstract**
A constitutive model for predicting the compression properties of porous poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) open-celled foam scaffolds was derived from the morphology of a unit cubic cell and extrapolated from describing the unit cell to the entire sample by relating cell characteristics to the relative density of the foam. The model was verified by comparing predictions with experimental findings for scaffold samples prepared by the gas foaming/salt leaching method and subjected to uniaxial compression testing and shown to accurately describe the compression behaviour of foams with low relative densities. 28 refs.
